Super Space Boy is a unique adventure in which a boy dons the role of his favorite comic super hero after reading it and dreaming of becoming the Space Boy. Space Boy is on the onerous mission of protecting his planet from aliens who wish to end all happiness on earth. Developed by Craig Lauderale, this iOS app sure scores well in terms of conceptualization.
Space Boy, the astronaut hero of the comic book series Space Boy is on a mission to seek and destroy aliens invading the planet, without using any laser beams or guns. He bounces up and down your device’s screen, bouncing rapidly off a balloon at the bottom of your screen. You have to control this balloon by dragging it across your screen. There are small green colored blobs with plus signs written over them. You must ensure that you regularly pass your balloon over them to keep it inflated. The balloon’s air is marked in terms of numbers from 4 to 1, wherein 4 signifies full air and 2 or below means insufficient air for bouncing, implying the end of your game.
As you start off the app, there is the optional story of how it all came about. Although there is a button to skip it, it is not always effective and the story continues to be narrated nonetheless. It explains how the young boy dreams of becoming his favorite comic hero one night and how he becomes this hero in this game.
As the actual game begins, all you have to do is tap the balloon and keep your eyes fixated on the screen. Keep the balloon below Space Boy to keep him from falling down into free space. You have to project him towards targets to earn points. You have a separate meter for your life value. By killing the aliens and collecting coins, you can add to this value. Hitting an alien will cause you to lose life. Each level ends with a boss whom you have to fight. The overall game is quite challenging. Controlling the direction of Space Boy with the balloon is not as easy as it sounds.
Although challenging, the game is addictive and fun. You need to practice to get good control over the controls of the game. A trial demo for the same being added would really help. Once that phase is past, the game becomes interesting and fun. You have to figure out the right techniques for direction and to keep up your life. There are additional bonus points after each stage for completing certain objectives. With these points, you can boost the abilities of your player through upgrades.
The graphics of the game are quite good. They could have been better though. This is a game for people of all ages who have some time to kill. Available for free on the App Store, it is a fun game that is worth the effort of downloading it. The concept and implementation have both been put forth very well indeed.
