Accounter is an accounting software package for the Mac OSX. It works via storing your data online. When you first login to the application, it will prompt you to sign up or register an account before you can use the application. After you registered an account, it will ask you to setup a company with some bank accounts.

Personally, I feel it thinks the individual as a company. You can add as many bank accounts as you want. After that, you can view all your savings accounts versus the expenses or bills you need to pay each month. The dashboard gives you a quick glance of your financial position.

Accounter is a unique application that makes use of cloud computing. Your personal finance information is stored on the vendor’s servers. You might question how safe is this if the vendor’s servers are compromised by hackers. If you sign up the premium account, you can import bank statements in their servers in encrypted format. There are some premium features if you subscribe. For example, you can pay $5 per month or $50 per year. The program allows single user access but it is for 30 days free trial only. If you want to use this program in your company and share it with your colleagues, you need to install it on the server and the license cost goes by per user. For example, if you have 5 to 10 users, you need to pay $75 usd. If you have more than 10 users, you only pay $50 usd. The program also allows you to login using your Yahoo, Google or Facebook account so you do not need to create an account if you find it a hassle.

I think the most important feature of this application is the ability to track the number of bills that are due. For example, if you are holding on some credit card bills, you need to pay them on time in order not to incur any interest payment. This program can do just that to save you some money. You can also use this program to keep track of the number of cheques you sent out for payments, as you need to key in the cheque numbers. It is a wonderful small program that shows a profit and loss summary but at a cost of a subscription price.
